Artificial sweeteners were created as a substitute for sugar to reduce calories in sweetened foods and drinks. They are added to many foods including diet sodas and yogurt, and many people use them in coffee and tea. There are five approved artificial sweeteners, all of which can be harmful: neotame, saccharin, acesulfame potassium, sucralose and aspartame. Sucralose and aspartame are the most often used and the most harmful to health.
